Rebellion in the Backyard

By Pedro Martínez Pírez on September 10, 2018

From Cuba, the first country in the Americas to recognize the People’s Republic of China, I express as a journalist my opposition to the pressure the Empire is now putting on the governments of three neighboring nations that decided to break off their diplomatic relations with Taiwan and establish links with popular China.

With the arrogance that characterizes the government from the North, Washington has re called for consultation its diplomats in Panama, El Salvador and the Dominican Republic; countries that  have  decided in recent months to recognize the People’s Republic of China, that has developed into a great world power.

Panama’s President Juan Carlos Varela stated last year, “the Republic of Panama has lacked diplomatic relations with the People’s Republic of China, a state that alone represents 20 percent of the world’s population and constitutes the second largest economy in the world. This is a situation that responsible leader cannot continue to perpetuate.”

Less than a year later the government of the Dominican Republic also recognized the People’s Republic of China.

And on August 21, the Republic of El Salvador did so through an announcement by its President, Salvador Sánchez Cerén, who said, “With this step, El Salvador joins 177 other nations of the world that have approved Resolution 2758 of the UN General Assembly, which recognizes the existence of only one China, and that Taiwan is an inalienable part of China.

And reverberations were also felt in recent days when the new President of Paraguay, Mario Abdo Benítez, decided to reverse the decision of his predecessor, Horacio Carles, who had agreed to relocate the Paraguayan embassy to Tel Aviv.

These are subtle but significant symptoms of rebellion in what consecutive U.S. administrations consider their backyard in Latin America.

And Cuba, which firmly supports the Palestinian people and repudiates the genocidal actions of the Zionist regime of Israel, an ally of the United States, proudly recalls having established diplomatic relations with the People’s Republic of China 58 years ago, on September 28, 1960, thereby exercising its right to make the decision on its national sovereignty.
