Venezuela and Trump’s Re-election

To speak about military aggression against the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela has become the most natural thing in the hegemonic media. The right of people to sovereignty, non-intervention, the peaceful resolution of controversies, and the non-threatening and non-use of force, principles that still form part of the UN Charter and many constitutions, including that of Mexico, are of no value to them. Principles that cannot be compromised by any other, such as human rights, hypocritically and shamelessly invoked by the neoliberals. What other form of accumulation is there that is not neoliberal that tramples on and violates all human rights with more ferocity and treachery? The systematic and multifaceted war to which Venezuela has been subjected for 16 years does not exist for this media either.

The United States is the principal author in imposing this stereotype attack on the audiences of its gigantic media machine, but the now discredited Lima Group, whose founding governments enjoy the highest degrees of unpopularity and popular repudiation in our region, has also contributed greatly to this. Although they now say otherwise they have also, by action or omission, carried a lot of water to the mill for a military action against the homeland of Bolívar.

In this context, Donal Trump, president of the great northern power, relentlessly charged Venezuela for the umpteenth time last week, this time at the UN General Assembly (GA) and then he reiterated to journalists that “all options are on the table, all of them. The strong ones and the less strong ones.”  In a threatening tone he added, “you know what I mean by strong”.

However, that same day the president of Venezuela, Nicolás Maduro, argued very solidly to the GA about the map of the systematic aggression of the United States against Venezuela in all areas, particularly the economic war and the damage it has done to the Venezuelan people.

Maduro denounced the media montage of the supposed “humanitarian and migratory crisis” as well as the activity to isolate and harass Venezuela developed by Washington and its allies within different instances and agencies of the international organization. He starkly demonstrated the active participation of the Colombian authorities and its oligarchy in the recently thwarted attack with drones against him and in the months-long training of the executors in that country.

The president also stressed that the attack had been prepared, planned and financed in the United States and pointed out that through diplomatic channels Caracas sent to Washington the evidence and names of those arrested during the investigation into the assassination attempt. Furthermore, he asked the UN Secretary General to appoint a special delegate of the international organization to lead an independent investigation into the events and expressed his hope that the FBI would agree to participate with the Venezuelan authorities in its clarification.

Maduro also reiterated his willingness to talk with Trump. “I would be willing,” he said, “to shake the hand of the president of the United States, to sit down and talk “about the bilateral differences and the issues of the region, so that they may be considered.” Those who are well informed, for now, know that the most likely course of military action against Venezuela is not direct U.S. intervention. Caracas is militarily a hard nut to crack with its civic-military unity and its modern armaments, so an adventure of several South American armies should not be discarded.

In any case, Trump positively acknowledged the Venezuelan leader’s offer and there was speculation by some media about a bilateral meeting but nothing happened and then the issue has been dropped all together. There are strong rumors that attribute to the dismissal of the eventual meeting to the actions of former Colombian President Álvaro Uribe and his friend and ally Senator Marco Rubio, who would have encouraged the media pack to tear their clothes off at the mere possibility of the meeting. What is certain is that it is the Cuban-American legislators, better known as the Miami mafia, and Uribe, who are most interested in promoting the attack on Venezuela in any way that is possible.

Obama’s former White House chief of staff and Chicago mayor Rahm Emanuel said a few days ago that Trump might be thinking of an attack on Venezuela before the November elections to divert attention from the countless scandals and accusations that follows him. The White House tenant needs the Republican Party’s victory in November to avoid impeachment and satisfy his obsession with being re-elected in 2020.
