Cuba: “We Will Continue the Dialogue with the Youth”

By Resumen Latinoamericano – Cuba

The Cuban Vice-Minister of Culture Fernando Rojas expressed in a press conference before national and foreign media an outline supporting the declaration of the Ministry of Culture in relation to the dialogue initiated on November 27 and the extreme pressure received by the sector that gave rise to the breakdown of the dialogue. Rojas stated “The attitude under pressure is unacceptable: neither the imposition of agendas, nor the presence of media that are at the service of the counterrevolution, nor something as disrespectful as demanding the presence of the President of the country will be accepted”.

In the last hours it has happened that some people have expressed that they did not participate in the authorship of the message sent to the Ministry of Culture. When you read the message sent, which is published in its entirety on the Cubarte web, you can see that all the names are exposed. “The question would then be what is happening when some people supposedly involved, are denying their signing onto that message. It is a complicated issue that I can only attribute to discrepancies around unacceptable demands expressed in that message”.

He reiterated the willingness of the country’s authorities to dialogue as part of a historic practice of the Revolution. He addressed the topics agreed upon on November 27 to start a cycle of meetings with the youth, in a respectful way and for the construction of the country:

  • Independent art that he described as a complex subject because of the diversity it contains.
  • Formalization of independent galleries.
  • Legal issues (that is within the framework of the Cuban Constitution).
  • Meeting of young people with the Minister of Culture. Matter foreseen from the agreements of the last congress of the young Cuban creators.

“We are going to talk to the young people but we will not give support to those who want to attack Cuba. Curiously enough, this is happening at the moment that President Trump ends his presidency. It is not fair to try to impose an agenda against the efforts the country is making to reactivate culture”.

We said “we cannot meet with large numbers of people for the Covid-19 protocols and for agreeing on the agendas and those involved in each issue”.

“We are interested in discussing with most of those who remained outside the Ministry of Culture”. “We will call all of them to make debates in an efficient way, according to the subject and those involved in it”.

He ended by saying “we will dialogue with all the artists who do not compromise their work with the sovereignty of the country and who do not receive funding or economic support from the agencies of the Counter-Revolution”.
