The First Secretary of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of Cuba and President of the Republic of Cuba, Miguel Díaz-Canel Bermúdez, has thanked those in solidarity with Cuba in the United States on his twitter noting, “we will not tire of saying thanks to the noble American people.” #WeAreCuba.

Solidarity actions with Cuba and calls for an end to the over 60 year criminal blockade of the island have increased since the US instigated protests in Cuba took place on July 11. On Friday a full page letter was published in the New York Times as part of the Let Cuba Live campaign that included the signatures of over 400 personalities voicing their unwavering support of the Caribbean nation.

The letter asks U.S. President Joseph Biden to repeal the 243 unilateral measures approved by the previous administration to tighten the siege against the largest island of the Antilles, and has the support of U.S. artists Danny Glover, Susan Sarandon, Jane Fonda and Mark Ruffalo.

It is also endorsed by former presidents Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva of Brazil and Rafael Correa of Ecuador, British politician Jeremy Corbyn, Reverend Jim Winkler of the U.S. Council of Churches, Brazilian theologian Frei Beto and Nobel Peace Prize winner Adolfo Pérez Esquivel, among others.

It seems inconceivable to us -the letter underlines-, especially during a pandemic, to intentionally block remittances and Cuba’s use of global financial institutions, something necessary for the importation of food and medicines.

On Thursday a large electronic sign was placed on the side of a building in Union Square in the heart of New York City calling for the end of the economic blockade of Cuba. And today over 400 people met Cuban Americans, who had walked from Florida, in front of the White House to call for the end of the embargo. In ten other US cities supporters of Cuba held caravans with the same message.

Meanwhile the first shipment of 1.7 million syringes for Cuba’s covid vaccines from the US has arrived on the island. This ongoing project, co ordinated by Global Health Partners with the participation of hundreds of organizations and individuals in the US, has already purchased 6 million of the much needed syringes.
