Peru: President Castillo Highlights Strategic Partnership with China

October 15, 2021

Today Peruvian President Pedro Castillo highlighted the strategic partnership nature of economic relations between his country and China following the impact of the Covid-19 pandemic.

‘China is a strategic partner for Peru in terms of trade and investment. We express our willingness to continue strengthening economic and trade relations’, he said in a message to the Canton Fair being held in China.

He highlighted his country’s participation in the important event when it is the 50th anniversary of the establishment between Peru and the People’s Republic of China, which, he said, ‘have been strengthened on the basis of reciprocity and shared interests’.

Among the milestones of that relationship, Castillo highlighted the validity, since 2010, of the bilateral trade agreement that allows establishing a relevant legal framework to improve the exchange of products and services and facilitated trade and investment, he said.

China is the main destination of Peruvian exports and the main supplier of products that Peru imports, he said, noting that the value of bilateral trade reached more than 22 billion dollars in 2020.

‘And even despite the effects of the pandemic, in 2021 we observe a notorious recovery of our bilateral trade flows, which, as of the first semester of the year exceeded 14 billion dollars’, he added.

According to President Castillo, Peru-China trade allows generating greater opportunities for economic growth for the benefit of both countries.

In addition, the exchange ‘results in the improvement of the quality of life of the population and at the same time is an important means to share knowledge, technology and culture and further strengthens the ties of friendship between the peoples’, said the president.
