In a new aggressive move against Cuba, the Biden administration today imposed visa restrictions on 28 Cuban officials pursuant to Presidential Proclamation 5377, which suspends non-immigrant entry into the United States of officials and employees of the Cuban government and the Communist Party of Cuba.
In a statement from Secretary of State Anthony Blinken, it is announced that the decision involves “senior members of the Communist Party of Cuba responsible for setting policy at the national and provincial levels” and “multiple officials working in the media and state-owned telecommunications sectors.” Although, as has been the practice in recent times, the names of those appointed are not made public.
According to the senior Biden administration official, the measure “comes in response to the actions of Cuban government officials that limit the enjoyment of human rights and fundamental freedoms of Cubans” and alleges that “these 28 officials include officials who are implicated in the repression of the peaceful protests of July 11, 2021”.
Once again, the U.S. government intends to impose its designs on Cuba, applying unilateral punitive measures aimed at trying to undermine the functioning of Cuban institutions, trying to frighten public officials and representatives of the law, and seeking immunity in their shameful actions for political operators and lawbreakers, useful to the imperial purposes of a soft coup in Cuba.
Like the previous three rounds of measures applied against Cuban officials, this new decision will have little practical effect, but it is a sign of Washington’s true political purposes in its relationship with Cuba; the cornerstone of which continues to be the brutal blockade imposed against our people and which this administration has applied with similar viciousness as Trump for the purpose of breaking the Cuban people and provoking a social explosion in the country.
